What is the Automatic Identification System (AIS)? PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 January 2010 21:28
aisPicture a shipboard radar display, with overlaid electronic chart data, that includes a mark for every significant ship within radio range, each as desired with a velocity vector (indicating speed and heading).  Each ship "mark" could reflect the actual size of the ship, with position to GPS or differential GPS accuracy.  By "clicking" on a ship mark, you could learn the ship name, course and speed, classification, call sign, registration number, MMSI, and other information.

What is Anti Heeling Control System (AHCS)? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 05 December 2009 19:24
anti-healing-control-system-smThe Anti Heeling Control system is used to detect the healing angle of the vessel and to rebalance the ship automatically by pumping ballast water from starboard to port or vice versa.

The system can operate with reversible or non reversible pumps, using remote controlled valves to derect the ballast water flow. The complete system inclide the master and optional the slave electronic unit, the mounting plate with heeling sensor, the pump starter panel, the pump and two level switches for low tank level.

How EPIRB's work PDF Print E-mail

small_epirb2EPIRBs
Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacons or EPIRBs are compact, buoyant and portable emergency devices specifically designed to transmit a radio distress signal to alert emergency authorities of a need for rescue. Once activated, an EPIRB will continuously transmit a specific radio signal to be detected by satellites. Following satellite detection, the emergency position and specific location data is then relayed to related authorities to begin rescue operations.Several EPIRB models can be owner registered with a relevant rescue co-ordination authority. Following activation, an owner registered EPIRB will provide rescue operators with the owner's name and emergency contact details plus the type of vehicle/vessel needing rescue. EPIRB registration greatly improves rescue response times.

osmosisShips are always surrounded by literally unlimited quantity of water, except perhaps when undergoing drydock repairs. Since there are human beings on board on all types of ships, we certainly need drinking water on board. We have already studied about the machine known as the fresh water generator which is used to produce pure water out of the salty sea water.
