Due to the ever rising fuel oil prices and emission reduction targets, owners and operators of 2-stroke low-speed engines have been looking for different ways to save on fuel expenses without having to compromise on engine reliability and emissions.
Wärtsilä Services has developed an upgrade kit, which enables the owners and operators to operate their vessels in “slow steaming” mode in order to save fuel costs while keeping emission levels in an acceptable range.

Dr. K.R. Sridhar, a mechanical engineering graduate from Madras has an energy plan anyone could get behind - electricity in a box.
That's the promise of the "Bloom box," the fuel-cell-powered invention coming from the Silicon Valley start up, Bloom Energy.
"In five to ten years, we would like to be in every home," Sridhar told Leslie Stahl on "60 Minutes" Sunday night.

Wärtsilä Corporation and London, Ontario, headquartered Trojan Technologies have signed an exclusive agreement to jointly develop, market, and distribute a ballast water treatment product for ships. The two hope to get synergistic benefits by combining Wärtsilä's marine market presence and from Trojan Technologies' leadership and experience in developing ultraviolet treatment solutions.

For reasons of cost, the final scrapping of ships and the recycling of materials has gravitated to developing countries and attracts considerable criticism regarding the working conditions of the personnel involved and the disposal of possible harmful residues in the ships. In particular, given lifespans of merchant ships in the region of 30 years, the scrapped hulls can contain substances which have long been identified as hazardous and outlawed in many parts of the works.

Wärtsilä to slash jobs, shift propeller production to China. Wärtsilä plans to slash 1,400 jobs from its global payroll this year--570 of them in the Netherlands. The company says it has "analyzed its manufacturing footprint." It plans to reduce its manufacturing capacity and to move the majority of its propeller production and auxiliary engine production to China.

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge will transfer part of its business involving high-speed engines to the group’s sister company, MAN Diesel. With effect from 1 January 2010, these activities will be integrated into MAN Diesel to form a Business Unit High Speed. The new Business Unit will offer diesel and gas engines in a performance range from 70 to 1,400 kW used in yachts, smaller working ships, locomotives and in decentralised energy supplies, for instance as emergency gensets.

F/V Jette Kristine gained 23.5% more bollard pull
The propeller designers and PrimeServ staff at MAN Diesel Frederikshavn, Denmark could sit back satisfied on 12 October when a full-scale bollard-pull test on the Esbjerg-based fishing vessel ‘Jette Kristine’, showed an increase in bollard-pull performance of an impressive 23.5%.

Radio Holland Netherlands BV has been appointed by the Dutch Transport and Water Management Inspectorate (Inspectie Verkeer en Waterstaat), as Testing ASP for Dutch, Dutch Antilles and Aruban flag vessels, per November 1st 2008. The first successful LRIT (Long Range Tracking & Identification) test resulted in the issue of the first “Statement of Conformity/LRIT Test Conformance Report” for the Dutch vessel ms.

To meet the growing demand for running large container vessels on varying loads, MAN Diesel has developed a turbocharger cut-out system that improves main-engine performance during low-load operation.
MAN Diesel’s Turbocharger Cut-Out System lowers main-engine fuel-oil consumption and improves performance during low-load operation. The system includes two, pneumatically operated cut-out valves placed at the turbine inlet and compressor outlet.
